About the book
The crucifixion of Jesus is as well attested as any event of the ancient world. This book accepts that, and reopens the file anyway.
Against that record stands a single verse of the Quran (4:157–158), given six centuries later: they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but another was made to resemble him to them. The world has treated this as the one place where the Quran is simply wrong. The File asks what kind of question the dispute really is, what evidence could settle it, and how far that evidence reaches.
It begins with the case for the crucifixion, stated as its best advocates state it: the creed Paul quotes, written within a few years of the events; the four Gospels’ shared core; Josephus and Tacitus; the heel bone of a crucified man found in 1968 with the nail still in it; and the criterion of embarrassment. The consensus includes the field’s most sceptical scholars. The File accepts all of it.
This is not apologetics dressed as examination. It is examination that refuses to look away.
Then it asks the question that procedure leaves open. The verse does not deny that a crucifixion was seen. It disputes who stood behind what was seen. Every Christian witness is credited as honest; the question is whether sincere testimony to an appearance can establish the identity beneath it. The File draws on the science of eyewitness identification and on fourteen centuries of Muslim commentary, including the tradition’s own hardest internal objections, and it finds the denial documented inside early Christianity itself, centuries before Islam.
Consider how an identification is tested in casework: the volume of sincere testimony measures sincerity, not what stood behind it, and only evidence of a different kind can settle who was there. The File lists what would settle this case, an execution record, a preserved identifier, an account from inside the executing party, and finds that none survives. Its verdict comes in three tiers, each labelled with its warrant: what the documents alone establish, what the recovered record is consistent with, and what follows from the text being what this series has established it is.
A dating rule applied both ways costs the author’s own side its most beloved exhibit.
The Gospel of Barnabas is excluded, because it cannot be dated before the sixteenth century. The hadith are kept out of the historical reckoning, under the standard applied to the Gospels. Four findings that would reverse the historical verdict are published in advance. A reader who stops at the first or second tier has weighed the evidence fully. The File closes on what the two traditions share: the Messiah sent by God, opposed, plotted against, and vindicated.
It is written for the Christian reader and the Muslim reader alike, for the historian, and for the young reader of debate videos who has been told that one side has no case. Every load-bearing claim is gathered into a verification register at the back, so that the File can be audited.
Its verdict is stated at the strength each tier earns, and labelled so that no reader mistakes one tier for another.
Written by Abdul Zahir Sheikh, a Certified Fraud Examiner and Senior Partner at BDO East Africa with four decades of investigative experience across fourteen countries, this is the book that takes the hardest point of difference between Christianity and Islam and examines it with respect for every witness.
A file everyone agrees on is exactly the file worth reopening.
