About the book

Four questions sit beneath every human life. They cannot be answered separately, because they come from the same source.

Is there a Creator? Why are we here? What happens when we die? How should we live? Humanity has divided over them more bitterly than over anything else. Each has its own traditions and its own arguments, and they are almost always approached by authority, by tradition or by feeling. This book approaches them by evidence, and treats them as a system: a chain whose links constrain one another, because all four answers come from one Author.

It is the book in the Beyond Human Design series written for everyone. It gathers what the other books found into one account that a reader can follow without having read any of them, and it assumes no mathematics and no religious background.

Both are evidence. Both are weighed by reason. They are not the same, and the line between them is marked at every step.

The first question is answered by direct evidence you can examine and check: the measurable properties of the Quran, its architecture, its knowledge and its preservation, restated from the earlier volumes, which returned their verdict beyond any doubt for which an actual reason can be given. The other three cannot be settled that way. No one can measure the purpose of a life or run a test on what follows death. They are answered instead on the tested testimony of the Author whom the first part establishes, and the book says so at every step.

Consider how a court treats a witness whose account of everything that could be checked has proved accurate. His testimony on what cannot be checked is not proof, but it is not nothing; most of what any person knows rests on testimony of that kind. On that testimony life is a test, death is a transition, and how we live matters. The book then meets the charge from suffering, the fate of those who never heard the message, and the question of why the evidence leaves belief free.

The answers carry a consequence that reaches beyond the argument. Every ground on which humanity has tried to unite, nation, race, class, even shared belief, has been partial. If one Creator made every human being, there is one ground no group owns: one origin, one dignity, one standard that counts neither tribe nor nation nor race. The book offers that as an implication of the evidence, not as a sentiment, and then hands the decision back to the reader.

The book keeps two disclosures in view throughout. The author is a Muslim, and believes the conclusion the book reaches; the answer to a motivated author, he writes, is not to pretend he has no motive but to make his method auditable. So the rules are published before the evidence, the strongest objection is stated in full, and the reader is handed the whole case.

It closes by asking what the conclusion requires of a life, and answers with the counsel of those who have made such a change: begin, and begin small.

Each chapter is short, each step is marked, and every finding drawn from another book in the series is credited to it, so the reader can go to the full evidence whenever he wants it. It is written for a reader of any background, any tribe and any creed.
